Four Pillars
Ba Zi reads a birth as four pairs — year, month, day and hour. Eight characters in total, hence the name.
- What it is
- Ba Zi converts a birth moment into four pairs of characters, one pair each for the year, month, day and hour. Each pair is a Heavenly Stem above an Earthly Branch. Eight characters in total, which is what Ba Zi literally means: eight characters.
- Why it matters
- The four pillars are the entire chart, and everything else in the system is read out of the relationships between them. It is a far more compact instrument than a Western chart, and it is built from a calendar rather than from positions in the sky.
- Common mistake
- Looking for planets. There are none — Ba Zi is not a positional system and does not care where Mars is. It reads a moment in a cyclical calendar, which is why the two traditions can describe the same person without ever contradicting each other.
